This week's singles - Tiscali Music News

Reviews of what is hot in the single world this week (released January 13th 2003)

This week's singles

2003-01-13

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (pictured above)

Brand new from The Lips and yet another classic!

The title-track from the Flaming Lips' recent album, 'Yoshima Battles The Pink Robots' is proof positive (not that it was needed) of exactly why this band remain such a compelling musical draw.

Eclectic, beguiling and, as always, incredibly difficult to pin down, this single, as with much of the band's recent album, is another beautifully understated dose of contemporary pop.

All formats include bonus tracks whilst the DVD adds the video and exclusive footage.

  • David Sneddon - Stop Living The Lie

Unlucky for some, but Friday 13th December proved to be a very lucky day indeed for 24 year-old Glaswegian David Sneddon as he won first prize in the final of the BBC music talent search Fame Academy.

Beating fellow finalists Sinead Quinn and Lemar Obika, Sneddon showed his star metal with his stellar performance of this self-penned single 'Stop Living The Lie'.

Showing off his understated star potential and obvious natural talent, this uplifting mid-tempo ballad is a perfect introduction to a youngperformer that could just go all the way.

Watch this space! Includes a bonus track alongside an acoustic version of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'.

  • Jamieson - True

Already a massive underground single with all the jocks lucky enough to own a copy, Jaimeson's sublime 'True' FINALLY arrives this week for mass musical consumption.

Produced by one of the garage underground's most talented (not-to-mention most respected) producers, this is a bumping, irresistibly funky UK groover that has enough appeal (thanks to an excellent 4/4 mix) to not only be a big hit but also crossover onto all kinds of different dancefloors. Don't miss!

  • Feeder - Just The Way Im Feeling

It goes without saying that the past year or so has been one of complete turmoil for Feeder.

For a band as dedicated and as tight-knit as they are to lose not just a band member but also a close friend, is almost beyond comprehension.

But this awful loss seems to have spurred the two existing band members onto far greater things.

Off the back of a firing comeback single ('Come Back Around') and a brilliant new album, the lads return with 'Just The Way I'm Feeling'.

Something a little different, it may also prove to be the single that shows there's so much more to Feeder than catchy rifferama.

All formats of this release include exclusive bonus tracks.

  • Libertines - Time For Heroes

With two successful singles under their belts already, 'Up The Bracket' and 'What A Waster', and a debut album that's had every hack from every top music mag salivating this year, The Libertines kick-start 2003 with yet another excellent, retro-rocker in the shape of 'Time For Heroes'.

Still a perfect illustration of how The Jam might have sounded had Paul Weller not pursued solo aspirations and still able to capture the sleazy side of London in three-and-a-half short minutes ofscuzzy rock, it's another gem from a band that just seem to be getting better and better.

All formats include demo versions of exclusive new tracks.

  • Zoe Birkett - Treat Me Like A Lady Enhanced

In 2002, thanks to the now infamous 'Pop Idol' series, Zoe Birkett, along with fellow finalists Will Young and Gareth Gates (we're sure you know who they are) became a household name.

Now signed to 19 Entertainment (one of the hottest management companies in the UK), Ms Birkett gets all set to launch her solo career with this superb debut single, 'Treat Me Like A Lady'.

Feisty, sexy and brimming with sassy attitude, Zoe Birkett, even at this early stage in her career, looks like a perfect contender for Anastacia's divatastic pop throne.

    Both formats include bonus tracks/remixes.

  • Reef - Give Me Your Love

The band's first release in around two years, 'Give Me Your Love' sees a return to the 'Glow'-era classic Reef.

Recorded in Los Angeles with George Drakoulias, this is the first of five new songs that will appear on the band's forthcoming greatest hits album, 'Together, The Best Of...', and shows that, when they put their minds to it anyway, these West Coast rockers haven't lost any of their fire.

All formats include exclusive bonus tracks.

  • Rosie Ribbons - A Little Bit Enhanced

Since the release of her debut single, 'Blink', Pop Idol survivor Rosie Ribbons has been a very busy girl.

She's toured with Blue, recorded a solo album (released later in the year) and, thanks to a naturally bubbly personality, not been far away from the newspapers and gossip columns. New single 'A Little Bit' is more of the same feisty pop.

Sexy, sassy and incredibly catchy, it's a wonderful second single from a young talent that could, no SHOULD, go far in 2003.

The release comeswith remixes alongside the raunchy video.

  • Nas - Made You Look Enhanced

Lifted from Nasir Jones's brilliant comeback album, 'Made You Look' (as with much of the album) is a stunning return to form for one of the hip-hop scene's most talented rappers. Doing what he's promised, but never quite delivered, for the last few years, this is a deep down, raw and sleazy track that seems to explode in its own subtle and kind of understated way.

A firing return on all fronts; the stunning original version of 'Made You Look' is also accompanied by an instrumental mix alongside the album version of bonus cut 'One Mic'.

  • Free Association (David Holmes) - I Wish I Had A Wooden Heart

The first single from David Holmes's Free Association album, '(I Wish I Had) A Wooden Heart' is an absolutely perfect example of what this brilliant collective is all about.

Showcasing the extraordinary voice of Petra Jean Phillipson in all its Billie Holiday-by-way-of-Eartha Kitt styled creamy seductiveness around a typically ecclectic, stunningly produced Holmes musical backdrop, this is a stunning first single from one of the UK's most promising new acts.

Whilst Roots Manuva adds his considerable weight to the 'Space Hog Dub' alongside exclusive new track 'Effectin''.

    Exquisite!

A firing return on all fronts; the stunning original version of 'Made You Look' is also accompanied by an instrumental mix alongside the album version of bonus cut 'One Mic'.
