  • 2009 Winner: Speech Debelle - Speech Therapy
Relative unknown U.K. rapper Speech Debelle beat out competition from established Brits Kasabian, La Roux, Florence and the Machine to take home this year's prestigious Mercury Prize.

The 25 year old Londoner was the shock winner of the coveted music award, with her debut album Speech Therapy getting the nod as Britain's best album of the past year.

The release only hit stores a month ago and has yet to appear on the official U.K. chart, but experts predict the win will dramatically boost sales, which will further swell DeBelle's overnight fortune - she picked up £20,000 as the Mercury Prize victor.

Debelle's album (signed to influential Big Dada label), features contributions from Micachu, Tunng's Mike Lindsay and label-mate Roots Manuva. The album includes the much praised single 'The Key'.

  • Akayzia Parker
Akayzia continues to win over fans and critics with her unique sound and strong belief in her chosen genre. Not only that, but the multi-talented artist is also being courted for her Manga-inspired comic books. After successful UK tours with Beth Rowley, Marianne Faithful and Aqualung, Akayzia is currently working with Rob Holden – of David Gray and Damien Rice fame – on her debut album Adamantium Heart.

'2009 is already looking pretty exiting' says Akayzia. 'It’s cool that my music and artwork are attracting attention without me having to conform to peoples ideals.' 'I feel like young black artists seem to be pigeon holed, that’s what I’ve experienced on the circuit. A few artists do break down barriers but not across the board – if they do, it’s only once in a blue moon.'
