Biography:
Born Lucy Silverman, 4 September 1980, Surrey, England. One of the new breed of UK singer-songwriters to emerge in the early years of the twenty-first century, Silvas made a minor impact with the release of her 2004 debut Breathe In.
The daughter of a Scottish mother and New Zealander father, she grew up in New Zealand and started playing piano at the age of five, graduating to songwriting by the time she had reached her teenage years. After relocating to England Silvas pursued her interest in music, recording a number of demos and casting around for a publishing contract.
She placed songs with popular UK acts such as Gareth Gates, Liberty X, Michelle and Rachel Stevens before eventually signing a solo recording contract with Mercury Records. She worked on her debut album with Mike Peden, a producer previously associated with soul-lite mainstays Des'ree and the Lighthouse Family.
Silvas enjoyed a UK hit single in October 2004 with "What You're Made Of', one of several piano-driven power ballads featured on the attendant Breathe In. Despite Silvas" powerful vocals and assured piano work, the album failed to elevate her above the glut of similarly styled US imports in the domestic charts.
The album's title track belatedly rose into the UK Top 10 at the start of 2005.
