  • He collapsed onstage on a couple of occasions and finally on 16 August 1977 his tired body expired. The official cause of death was a heart attack, undoubtedly brought on by barbiturate usage over a long period. In the weeks following his demise, his record sales predictably rocketed and "Way Down" proved a fittingly final UK number 1.

Drug related heart attack 16/08/77 - Age 42

August 16 marked the anniversary of the death by 'drug overdose' of Elvis 'The King' Presley, the ubiquitous American rock & roll star and actor. The cause of death was actually cardiac arrhythmia, a condition caused by altering the natural rhythm of your heart. At the time of his death, Elvis was obese and was taking dozens of prescription drugs.

He had a professional career spanning from 1954 until his death in 1977, although he continues to sell large numbers of records to this day, reaching number 1 on both singles and album charts around the world.

Overall, Presley is reported to have sold over one billion singles and albums, which would make him the biggest-selling solo artist of all time with a reported 19 million singles sold in the United Kingdom alone, more than a third of the US tally.
