Biography:
These Swedish sleaze rockers finally began to reap international success in the late 90s. The band, formed by four high school friends, came together in Nässjö, Sweden in 1987. Nicke Borg, Dregen (guitar), Peder Carlsson (drums) and Johan Blomquist (bass) were briefly joined by singer Tobbe, before Borg was switched from bass to handle vocals.
The band recorded several demo tapes and toured extensively throughout Sweden, before releasing a self-financed 12-inch single, "Something To Swallow", in 1991. They continued to tour before signing a recording contract with Megarock Records two years later.
Premiered by the single "Electric Suzy", their debut album, Diesel And Power garnered the band praise for their energetic update of the sleazy glam rock sound of fellow Scandinavians Hanoi Rocks. Following the release of the album the band remained quiet for an 18-month period, with Dregen forming the Hellacopters with Nicke Andersson of Entombed.
In 1997, with Dregen back on board, the Backyard Babies returned to the international live circuit, supporting US hardcore outfit Social Distortion. They then signed a recording contract with MVG Records and set about recording their second album.
Total 13 appeared in January 1998, and gained the band further plaudits from critics won over by their aura of rock 'n' roll decadence. The limited edition single "(Is It) Still Alright To Smile?" featured ex-Wildhearts singer Ginger on the b-side, a cover version of Faster Pussycat's "Babylon".
Making Enemies Is Good continued their honest pursuit of good old-fashioned heavy rock with a hint of punk.
