QUESTION:
My 1998 Renault Megane Coupe will not always start. It will go one minute but if parked and left, it won't start. However, it turns over. I have replaced lamda sensor and all spark plugs and leads. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
ANSWER:
It sounds like you have tried all the obvious things. Initially we would suggest an electrical problem too but as the engine is turning over, it must be something else. Investigate the fuel supply - it could be the source of your problem.
QUESTION:
My Ford Fiesta heater is blowing cold air. I have changed the thermostat and the heater valve but it is still running cold. The dash lights come on the blower controls so the matrix is getting power. Do you have any ideas?
ANSWER:
Is your engine overheating as well? It does sound like you have a blockage in the water system that isn't related to the thermostat. Try flushing the water system through with a proper flush available from most accessory stores.
QUESTION:
My 1999 Ford Escort is using up too much fuel. It used to be pretty economical. I don't know what might be the problem?
ANSWER:
You could start just about anywhere! When was the car last serviced, is it running smoothly, are the tyre pressures correct and have you driving it in the same kind of environment as before? A good service is probably the cure.
QUESTION:
The head gasket has just blown on my 1.6 Rover 45 which is just over four years old. I have heard that this is a fault with this Rover model. Is this correct and will Rover repair under warranty?
ANSWER:
It's highly unlikely because unless you have some kind of extended warranty, plus proof of other owners suffering the same problem, the bill is going to land on your doormat.
QUESTION:
My Vauxhall Astra 1.6 cuts out when the air conditioning is switched on, any ideas?
ANSWER:
This sounds very much like an electrical fault. Air conditioning soaks up a lot of power and is a big drain on the battery. You will probably need to have it checked by an experienced mechanic.
QUESTION:
How much would it cost to convert a Volkswagen Passat from left hand drive to right hand drive? Is it going to be costly and can I take it to a private garage?
ANSWER:
There are so many VW Passats on the market second hand we can't understand why you might want to do this? It would be extremely expensive and, if your car is more than four or five years old, you would be far better off cutting your losses and simply buying a right hand drive car instead.
QUESTION:
My new VW Polo 1.4 TDI can only return about 46 mpg, even driven very carefully. On the motorway, at a steady 60mph it does less. All reviews say they are good on fuel?
ANSWER:
This is a common complaint with modern cars! New owners read the official Government mpg figures and then struggle to achieve it. You have to remember that official mpg testing is carried out under strict regulations and conditions which often show new models up in a much better light. It does seem unfair but your frustrations are only likely to increase if you try to tame your driving to get the elusive mpg figure.
QUESTION:
I put a little bit of windscreen washer fluid, maybe a cup, into my coolant by mistake. The car is running fine, but should I bring it in?
ANSWER:
It is very unlikely to have any affect on your system if you are sure the amount wasn't any greater.
QUESTION:
Is it okay to drive a long distance (a 480 miles round trip) with a timing belt that needs to be changed?
ANSWER:
We would suggest not, even if you have proper roadside cover. The cost of repair away from home is inevitably higher and you would have serious inconvenience to your trip if your belt failed.
QUESTION:
I really would like an Audi with the new DSG automatic transmission. I can't afford the car - is anyone else doing it?
ANSWER:
The good news is that Skoda is about to bring out a DSG version of the Octavia. It may not have the same badge kudos but you might be surprised how good the latest version is.
