Ask a mechanic - 22/04/04

Question:
My son just had his 1997 Monte Carlo fixed - a problem with intake manifold gasket. My daughter took her van to have the oil change at the same place and they said her intake manifold gasket is leaking. Is this a common problem? If the antifreeze is not in the oil, does this need to be taken care of?

Answer:
A leaking intake manifold will allow additional air into the fuel mixture and therefore upset the burn balance, which may cause rough running.

Question:
I have a J-reg Renault Clio 1.4. The heater would only work on one setting and now it has stopped working altogether. Can you help?

Answer:
Sounds like the heater's motor resistor, which can be found adjacent to the motor clipped to the heater body. You may need to drop the wiper gear to allow a better access to the unit.

Question:
The cam belt has broken on my 1.6 16-valve Astra. Is there likely to be valve damage?

Answer:
Yes I'm afraid so. Replace the cam belt first, ensuring you fit it inline with the timing marks and turn the engine over by hand. If it turns over OK start the engine and if it runs OK you'll be lucky.

Question:
I have a 1994 Escort 1.8 Ghia and lately when I turn the key the ignition lights but the car won't start. I have been told that it could be a relay, which controls the starter and that it is a common problem with Escorts. Is this correct?

Answer:
It could be the relay but it could also be the starter motor itself, the battery or an engine earth lead. Ensure these are clean, undamaged and secured to the vehicle's bodywork.
