Used car of the week: Mazda MX-5

Highly Recommended. Mazda's MX5 (98-05) was a back to basics sportscar that kick-started the market for affordable roadsters after a decade-long lull. Along with lithe handling and an enthusiastic engine, the MX5 has proved terrifically tough and reliable. And it's also economical to run.

Early versions were available with a 1.6-litre engine but the 99bhp it provided wasn't enough to exploit the chassis' full potential. Luckily the vast majority have a 1.8-litre 124bhp unit, allowing keen drivers to take greater advantage of the front-engine, rear wheel drive set-up, which is complemented by a quick, precise gearbox and strong brakes. It all helps the Mazda to be a thoroughly involving drive.

It consistently achieves high scores in reliability and customer satisfaction surveys, and there are loads of good examples around for less than £3,500 it's an excellent used buy. 'Grey' imported MX-5's are cheaper, but usually have odd specifications, no service history and less corrosion protection than UK cars - we'd advice you to avoid.

Tiscali verdict: 8/10: Sporty, affordable, the MX-5 is a great drive - though the 1.6 is a bit slow.
