The A8 was a decent luxury drive and more than capable of providing the less egocentric owner with plenty of cabin space, brilliant build quality, fine comfort and exciting performance. Early models may have been front-wheel drive but later top spec versions came with the renowned Quattro all-wheel drive system, providing secure handling for a heavy car.

When it was in production the big Audi's anonymous styling was always its Achilles heel (even after a 2003 facelift it failed to turn enough heads in the executive car park), but if that's of no great concern then A8s are a potentially great used buy. High milers usually remain reliable and fault free and engines are extremely durable, if very thirsty. 4.2-litre Sport Quattro models are the most popular, combining pampering with high performance. Avoid the 2.8-litre V6, which feels distinctly underpowered, providing just 172bhp.
Tiscali verdict: 8/10: Elegant, refined and well built - the CLK is satisfying to drive.
