It's hard to justify why Audi has built the latest S8. One of the latest crop of Lamborghini-powered Audi's, the S8 will do nothing for the German company's green credentials with official fuel consumption little over 20mpg and it pumps out 320 grams of carbon dioxide for every kilometre travelled. If your keen on cutting you carbon footprint, this might not be the car for you. Realistically, the £70,625 price will beyond the reach of most people and I'm sure that green credentials will not figure highly in the purchase. No longer the ultimate expression of Vorsprung durch Technic, that's reserved for the Audi R8 supercar. But can the S8 offer more than the more expensive Maserati Quattroporte? After a long weekend, at the wheel I have my answer.

The S8 is the fastest version of Audi's aluminium-bodied, Maserati Quattroporte rival. Styling-wise, apart from the racy 'S' add-ons, the bodywork looks little changed from the standard A8. From the front, the S8 looks suitably sporty, yet still follows the Audi family look. Worthy of particular mention is the big, aggressive grille with vertical and horizontal bars. Other design highlights from the front include the S8's bi-functional headlights with daytime running lights - yes, they're as bright as they seem at night. At the back, there are rear lights with LED technology but it's the quad exhausts at the back that hint at the S8's power. The rest of the design feels subtly special, with the huge 20-inch alloy wheels and two discreet V10 badges on the front wings.
Inside, the S8 feels equally special. There's the usual quality feel; the sports seats are comfortable and supportive and trimmed in the softest Valcona leather, extending to the dashboard which has attractive carbon fibre-look trim in place of the usual wood. There's enough headroom and adjustment for the seats so that even the tallest drivers can get comfortable. Because it's a big executive saloon, there's plenty of boot space. Is it special enough to justify the high price you may ask? The answer is Yes. Only the other Audi's I've driven this year have felt so superbly constructed. Although current A8 was first launched back in 2003, the S8 feels very contemporary.

The S8 is a joy to drive. The 444bhp 5.2 litre V8 FSI Lamborghini engine may owe more to Germany than Italy in its origin, but there's no doubt that it provides a sonorous accompaniment for any drive. The throttle is very responsive, and with all four wheel controlled by the Quattro four-wheel drive sytem there's no wheel spin and it guns its way to big speeds. The six-speed manual transmission allows manual changes via the steering-wheel mounted paddles, which in sport mode holds on to gears longer and changes the shift points. The S8 might have over 400 horses on tap, but because of its Quattro drivetrain it's very easy to drive fast - in fact the S8 makes normal motorways speeds almost seem slow. It's all too easy to go too fast and it could prove be a licence loser. The steering is direct, slack-free and makes the car very easy to place on the road. The S8's pretty good at pottering around town too; playing its luxury saloon role well with a good amount of ground clearance, though the throttle and brakes are perhaps a little over-sensitive.

To sum up, the S8 is a handsome, well-made and unique choice in this market. If you're in the market for a £70,000+ executive saloon, its combination luxury and performance are sure to appeal.
