Figures from APACS, the industry association representing plastic card issuers, show a record £374m of charitable donations were made in the first four months of 2005 using debit and credit cards.
This is a £200m jump in the value of charitable donations made on cards compared to the same period in 2004.
Card issuers can make a mint from transaction charges. In a gesture of goodwill, all the major providers waived their fees on the Tsunami appeal and Red Nose Day, which made up the bulk of the new money.
Now all we need is for the major banks and credit card companies to waive their fees on all other donations via credit and debit card.
