And when drivers do stop, their kindness doesn't end there. One in three who stopped would comfort an animal until help arrived, but even more (39%) would take the animal straight to a vet themselves. Just 6% would move the animal to the side of the road and drive off, says Virgin Money Pet Insurance.
However, owners of pets injured in road accidents may find themselves facing bigger-than-expected vet bills. Six in 10 people thought the bill for treating a dog involved in a road accident would be up to £500. But the cost of treating a dog with a broken leg can be nearer £1,000.
