The best thing you can do is buy an energy efficient machine, which generally use around a third of the energy of an ordinary one.

However, there are less expensive ways to save energy with your washing habits.

Firstly, washing at 40 degrees rather than 60 degrees uses 30% less electricity. You really don't need it that hot with modern washing powder.

Secondly, don't just throw a few items in like many people do. Wait until you have a full load of dirty laundry.

Finally, don't use the tubmle dryer. These use a huge amount of energy and most of us can find space for a drying rack somewhere in our homes.
