What's important for the Big Day

Your wedding day should be one of the most memorable and happiest days in your life. It is unsurprising then that a substantial time, effort and cost are involved in the build up to the big day. Research has shown that the cost of a typical wedding in the UK is increasing and, on average a couple can expect to spend around £16,000. As with any investment, no matter how much planning you do it will not stop the unfortunate and unexpected disasters from striking. It is therefore advisable to protect your wedding with wedding insurance.

Factors that can spoil such an important day include the wedding being cancelled due to illness, the wedding reception venue becoming unavailable at the last minute, the wedding dress being damaged, the wedding rings being lost or the wedding transport failing to turn up!

Top Ten Claims…
1. Wedding attire damaged
2. The re-taking of the wedding photos
3. Cancellation due to illness or bereavement of the immediate family
4. The caterers fail to turn up at the reception
5. The wedding rings are lost
6. The wedding transport fails to turn up
7. Cancellation due to the venue being double booked
8. Public liability property damage
9. Wedding presents are lost or stolen
10. Financial failure of suppliers

Unusual claims…
Insurers often receive unusual wedding insurance claims such as claims for unexpected transportation costs for vicars unable to get to the ceremony and settling a claim for the cost of replacing cutlery stolen the night before the big day.

Although wedding insurance can not prevent any of these disasters from striking it does provide a safeguard to prevent you from losing out financially if things should go wrong.

What’s covered?
A good wedding insurance policy should provide cover for just about anything that can be included in your big day including:

  • Cancellation and expenses
  • Wedding attire
  • Wedding rings
  • Wedding photographs
  • Public liability
  • Wedding presents
  • Wedding stationary
  • Supplier deposits
  • Wedding video
  • The wedding cake
  • Wedding documents/Passport
  • Luggage/Property
  • Personal accident
  • Wedding cars and transport
  • Professional counselling
  • Legal expenses
  • Wedding flowers
  • Delayed Travel (Overseas only)

Wedding insurance premiums tend to start from around £47. For this level of cover the insurer will cover up to:

  • £5000 if you have to cancel or curtail your wedding
  • £3000 for non refundable supplier deposits in the event of financial failure of the company or if they fail to turn up
  • £3000 for loss or damage to your wedding attire
  • £2250 for expenses in retaking the photographs/video due to loss or damage, faulty material or failure of the photographer to arrive.
  • £2250 for loss or damage to the rings within 7 days of the wedding
  • £2500 for loss or damage to the wedding flowers up to 7 days prior to the day
  • £2250 for loss or damage to the wedding cake within 24hours of the reception
  • £2500 for failure of the wedding transport to turn up due to accident, breakdown or non appearance when a contract is in force
  • £500 for loss or damage to the wedding documents 24hours before or after the wedding
  • £6000 for legal cost and expenses incurred by your arising from the wedding or the reception
  • £2million for Public Liability

Remember, the higher the level of cover required the higher the premium will be!

Weddings overseas
If you have chosen to get married abroad it is still possible to take out a wedding insurance to cover you. Overseas wedding insurance polices start from £59 for a wedding in Europe, £79 for a worldwide wedding excluding USA and Canada and £99 for worldwide location including USA and Canada. For this level of cover the insurer will cover up to:

  • £5000 for cancellation and curtailment expenses
  • £3000 for non refundable supplier deposits in the event of financial failure of the company or if they fail to turn up
  • £3000 for loss or damage to your wedding attire
  • £2500 for loss or damage to the wedding flowers up to 7 days prior to the day
  • £2250 for expenses in retaking the photographs/video due to loss or damage, faulty material or failure of the photographer to arrive.
  • £2250 for loss or damage to the rings within 7 days of the wedding
  • £3000 for delayed departure of your transport to your wedding venue
  • £2500 for failure of the wedding transport to turn up due to accident, breakdown or non appearance when a contract is in force
  • £1000 for loss of damage to your luggage or property during your honeymoon. Single item limit of £250
  • £1000 for loss or damage to documents or passports within 7 days of departure to the wedding venue and during the honeymoon.
  • £6000 for legal cost and expenses incurred by your arising from the wedding or the reception
  • £2m for Public Liability

What’s not covered?
There is very little a wedding insurance policy won’t cover. However, wedding insurance is unable to provide cover for the bride or groom getting cold feet! It also can not guarantee that you will have a beautiful sunny day!

As with all insurance policies it pays to read the policy terms and conditions so that you are fully aware what claims the insurer will pay out on and which will be excluded.
