I agree with P Elaine Staley in that it is the hard workers of this country who suffer every time. On low income but too high to qualify for any benefits, yet we pay the most living costs. People on benefits can afford luxuries that we cannot anymore. Bye the way I am a pensioner who now has to keep working as I cant afford not to and I have worked all my adult life. So much for a happy retirement!!!

I have been out of work since september 2008 and had recieved jobseekers allowance for six months which has now ended.
I am unable to claim any benefits as my wife earns £12,000 per year.
I welcome the fact that Mr darling will offer me work or re-training next september.
PS I am 63 years of age.

P Elaine Staley says:
Many, but not all, of the 'supposedly' sick and disabled are just very plausible and deceitful and simply laughing at the rest of us.
When will the Labour government acknowledge that it is those who work hard and on comparatively low incomes, but slightly too much to be eligable for income support etc; are the backbone of the country and they need to be rewarded.
Why is there such an emphasis on the young with very little consideration for the elderly who generally had the 'work ethic' that many young people do not have.
It is quite right that there is assistance for those who have lost their jobs but the government needs to recognise that there is a nucleus of young people who have no intention of working and provide benefits only for those who contribute to society.
This budget penalises the hard workers and assists many idlers.
