Budget - 2008

Drinkers and drivers of "gas guzzling" cars have paid the price as Alistair Darling delivered his first Budget as Chancellor.

Mr Darling set out plans to overhaul the vehicle excise duty system and introduce a new "showroom tax" to hit the drivers of the most-polluting vehicles.

At the same time he put up alcohol duties by 6% above inflation from midnight - slapping 4p on a pint of beer and 55p on a bottle of spirits in a new crackdown on "binge-drinking Britain".

There was also a warning that he would legislate next year to impose a charge on disposable plastic bags unless the retailers took action to curb their use.

However, his attempts to establish his "green" credentials were hampered by an announcement that a planned 2p increase in fuel duty due to come in April would be delayed.

Mr Darling said that his "responsible" measures would enable him to take further measures to cut child poverty.

However, he was also forced to slash his forecasts for economic growth and announced a big increase in Government borrowing.

David Cameron dismissed Mr Darling's claims that the UK was well-placed to weather the global financial storm.

The Tory leader said: "As this country enters troubled times it could hardly be worse prepared."

Mr Cameron accused Mr Darling of presiding over the biggest deficit in western Europe and the highest interest rates in the G7.

let the politicians try to live on a normal wage they would find it impossible to do they are biggest spongers of all their expenses alone are worth five peoples wages maybe more, this government isnt bothered about working class people or their families we are just here to have them line their own pockets at our expense,

What a load of tripe, the so called green taxation by this goverment. Most people already accept that this is just another front to rip us all off especially the motorist. You just have to ask yourself what good are the likes of us doing in our country. Our country being the size of a postage stamp compared to the likes of China,America etc.Who are throwing all sorts of pollution into the atmosphere.

Devils advocate says:
Bob, I'm afraid you have missed the point. People like you and me don't want bailifs knocking at the door or a criminal record so the government know they can charge what they like. If you have ambition and try to better your self this government will not help you. If you can't be bothered, you do well so that you vot labour again. The pollution and congestion in London created by black cabs is off the scale yet they don't pay yet every other job that relies on the roads does. How is that fair? Watch V for Vendetta it's getting scarely close to the truth...

I agree with Austen. When are our MPs going to use small cars and pay congestion charges etc.The persecution against 4x4s will kill off our world beating Land/Range Rover technology, and put more people out of work, whilst giving away another essential commodity like our Steel industry. I d sack all of this overpaid,dictatorial,non-listening Government.

When are our so called Honerable Members of the Government going to actualy do some good, I travel quite a way to my place of work & need a 4X4 for it's off road caperbilities I enjoy a quiet drink. Why pick on me or people like me I don't get vast wages yet it's people like me who get slammed everytime. Improve Park & Ride schemes take cars out of towns & cities A vehicle at a steady 50 - 70 mph is producing minimal emissions where as a vehicle ticking over in traffic or moving slowly is producing significantly more emissions this fact but sadly there are few good Park & Ride schemes so we jam our selves into towns & cities masking our lives miserable & our air poluted. People with 4X4's who clearly only use them for their seating capacity are deluded get a people carrier the clue is in the name they are more economic & better suited to that task.

Ok Lets start disecting this government... Green-More like black...if the govenment realy want to be seen as being green then they should look at stopping the systematic distruction of the green belts stop cocreting over the south of the uk just to build houses for migrant workers, start influensing other governments around the world to stop the neadless distruction of the rain forests so that we can bring back a balance to the climate (we produce co2 trees absorb it and produce O2 simple realy) When are the government going to put pressure on the Oil companies to produce and make available bio fuels lets face it ive yet to see a petrol station that sells bio fuel and what ever happend to LPG??? This WON'T happen cos the goverment are nice and cosy in bed with the oil companies... Booze - putting tax on the pint is a wast of time cos binge drinkers generally drink out of the pub and get their booze from sainstescasda who now sell it as a loss leader much the same as they used to do with milk and bread...the tax should go on the supermarkets who sell this irresposibly - the local publican is a responcible person (they have to be to have a licence) and can limit what people drink but how often have you stood in the supermarket behind someone who is taking full advantage of 2 for £20 or buy one get one free...Tax the supermarket not the country pub (soon to be a nice country home for a lazy city worker)... TAX - well just don't get me started our tax under Labour is at the higest level ever and their deffence is oh well intrest rates are LOW... What a crock... Its time we got this goverment out or time they listened to the people and started coming up with new ways to raise revenue...however lets face it we don't have a choice in this country as the other parties are just as usless the blues will do the same as the reds and the yellows will panic and hand everything over to Europe...

Goverment rip off!!!, i have a so called gas guzzerler, it does around 28 mpg, i sell small second hand cars, fiestas corsa's etc,i use these cars from time to time and they dont do much over 30mpg so why are these not high tax????.Its complete rubbish that the goverment is thinking green,or they'd all run around in smart cars! and not the limos they use. its yet another tax .Sorry to rant but its the hard working little man getting the wrong end off the stick again.Great Britain should now be called Tax Britain!!!!

Mrs Olive Phelps says:
I have a Toyota Rav P Reg 1600cc and I am paying the same road tax as someone driving a 3.5 Range Rover or one of the cars used by the members of our Government because my car is taxed by its age. My car is not a gas guzzler at all, it is very economical. I must also mention that our so called green Government is only playing at being green. Why do we export our scrap metal to China who are busy polluting the planet at the speed of light. What our Government is doing (and lets face it it is only a money making exercise) to make us greener is completely useless - we recycle paper etc only to have most of it dumped in tips and the so called energy saving lights will only present a much bigger problem because we cannot dispose of them safely when they contain Mercury!!! Its all about money in the MPs pockets.

Harry Dearie says:
The reason that I have a so called gas guzzler is that I am a foster carer who can have up to five children in my care from toddlers up to teenagers . I am also resposible for there safety while out on the road in a vechile which is no doubt much more safer than your noddy smart car .Try getting five children and two adults into one of them with prams ect Mr Darling . I am saving the goverment a fortune in residential chid care but yet I am penalised as a Foster carer.
