Naked Wines Reviewed

Summer is here at last and with it, the time to publish the results of the Tiscali taste test has arrived. We were testing the wines ordered for us using the Naked Wines offer of £25 off a case of wine.

We did not opt for a blind tasting. We knew little about the wines prior to the tasting and had no sight of what the prices might be. As such, we approached the exercise with few pre-conceptions.

To spit or swallow? . . . And other tasting tips.
Given the option to spit or swallow, we swallowed. We tested three main factors:

  • Appearance, which included colour and legginess - legginess occurs when you see downward trailing legs after you have swirled the wine in a glass
  • Nose, which encompasses every impression imaginable from immediate reactions to a smell to more poetic descriptions
  • Taste, which like nose elicited some breathtaking descriptions which surprised us

We then took a punt on the price we thought we would expect to pay for such a wine and how and where we felt it would best be served.

What we tasted
We tasted three wines in the following order:

We served the white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) very chilled but the red wines (the Syrah/Shiraz and Temperanillo) at room temperature.

The Results: Sauvignon Blanc
The Sauvignon Blanc was served chilled and described as having:

  • Shades of apple and lime cordial
  • An elderflower cordial tone to it
  • A colour not dis-similar to a light olive oil
  • A golden tone like summer sunlight cutting through a pond

Nearly overcome by the poetry of our descriptions we thought it time to pull ourselves together and take a hearty sniff of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The panel described the wine thus:

  • Sharp, like a freshly cut Apple or Gooseberry
  • Undertones of heady Passion Fruit and Fig
  • The impact of a herbacious border in Spring, an accumulation of light floral smells
  • Like crushed blackcurrant leaves, at once sharp and green yet fruity

Unable to hold ourselves back it was straight on to the taste test.

  • Tart, like grapefruit or orange rind
  • A soothing, dry, lychee flavour
  • Refreshing like fresh white grape juice with cucumber
  • Quite a strong after taste but not unpleasant

Overall, we liked this wine and thought it ideal as a party wine, probably perfect with canapes like salmon, prawns or a light, creamy cheese. We thought this would retail at an unscary £8 whilst it is in fact £6.99 before your £25 discount. Get £25 off a case of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

The Results Continued: Syrah/Shiraz
As before, we present the results in order of appearance, nose and taste.

  • Very dark, velvety and leggy
  • Like a liquid Black Forest Gateau
  • Silk, black Cherry and dark Chocolate
  • A solid, demanding, Grace Jones quality

On the nose the general concensus was:

  • Like tropical earth after a rainstorm
  • A spicy and chocolatey hit
  • Church incence and vanilla
  • Musk, pepper and mustard in concert

On the palate the taste elicited a delightedly mixed review:

  • Meaty, beaty big and bouncy
  • Cloves, pepper and methol combine for a smooth sip
  • A powerful hit to the back of the throat with a sharp after taste and a hit to the nose
  • Ideal with a big meaty roast, this needs a challenge

The comparison with Grace Jones in appearance certainly seemed borne out by the taste! We rated this wine as costing in the region of £8, in fact you can pick it up for £ 6.99 before your discount.

This wine was felt to be best taken with a good hearty roast as on it's own it would scare the horses. We agreed that a little more age might benefit this wine, not too long, just a year or so. In addition, it was felt that we should have let this wine breathe a little more (it had been open for 35 minutes prior to tasting). Get £25 off a case of South African Syrah.

The Results Continued: Temperanillo Crianza
In appearance the descriptions ranged widely:

  • Leggy and syrupy like Port
  • Chocolatey red, like a Ruby Port
  • Deep purple, smoke on the water (is there a musical theme here?)
  • Solid with a well formed tone and colour

On the nose there was broad concensus and favour:

  • Raisins and dates with a sweet, cakey note
  • Leather and rum
  • An almost medicinal quality, like a favourite cough syrup
  • Fennel, caramel and a good and chocolatey fruit and nut bar

Right! We liked this one, it looked good and smelt good. We couldn't wait to taste it and we were not disappointed.

  • Deceptively light, polite and well structured
  • A wine to relax with, like a warm fruity pudding in a glass
  • Complex yet smooth chocolate, pepper, caramel and butter
  • Cinammon sweetness with a well formed dry and fruity note, well structured and satisfyingly rich but very good right now!

The Temperanillo (Crianza) was a wine we felt would work with or without food. Price wise we thought this was easily a £10 wine. In fact it is £ 7.49 before your discount! Get £25 off a case of the Crinel 2005 Temperanillo.
