Summer is here at last and with it, the time to publish the results of the Tiscali taste test has arrived. We were testing the wines ordered for us using the Naked Wines offer of £25 off a case of wine.
We did not opt for a blind tasting. We knew little about the wines prior to the tasting and had no sight of what the prices might be. As such, we approached the exercise with few pre-conceptions.
To spit or swallow? . . . And other tasting tips.
Given the option to spit or swallow, we swallowed. We tested three main factors:
We then took a punt on the price we thought we would expect to pay for such a wine and how and where we felt it would best be served.
What we tasted
We tasted three wines in the following order:
We served the white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) very chilled but the red wines (the Syrah/Shiraz and Temperanillo) at room temperature.
The Results: Sauvignon Blanc
The Sauvignon Blanc was served chilled and described as having:
Nearly overcome by the poetry of our descriptions we thought it time to pull ourselves together and take a hearty sniff of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The panel described the wine thus:
Unable to hold ourselves back it was straight on to the taste test.
Overall, we liked this wine and thought it ideal as a party wine, probably perfect with canapes like salmon, prawns or a light, creamy cheese. We thought this would retail at an unscary £8 whilst it is in fact £6.99 before your £25 discount. Get £25 off a case of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
The Results Continued: Syrah/Shiraz
As before, we present the results in order of appearance, nose and taste.
On the nose the general concensus was:
On the palate the taste elicited a delightedly mixed review:
The comparison with Grace Jones in appearance certainly seemed borne out by the taste! We rated this wine as costing in the region of £8, in fact you can pick it up for £ 6.99 before your discount.
This wine was felt to be best taken with a good hearty roast as on it's own it would scare the horses. We agreed that a little more age might benefit this wine, not too long, just a year or so. In addition, it was felt that we should have let this wine breathe a little more (it had been open for 35 minutes prior to tasting). Get £25 off a case of South African Syrah.
The Results Continued: Temperanillo Crianza
In appearance the descriptions ranged widely:
On the nose there was broad concensus and favour:
Right! We liked this one, it looked good and smelt good. We couldn't wait to taste it and we were not disappointed.
The Temperanillo (Crianza) was a wine we felt would work with or without food. Price wise we thought this was easily a £10 wine. In fact it is £ 7.49 before your discount! Get £25 off a case of the Crinel 2005 Temperanillo.
