As someone who has battled forever with an unruly mop and whose hair straighteners have seen better days I'm always on the lookout for miracle treatments. The Brazilian Blowout sounded perfect for battle with my barnet.
A natural hair relaxer, this new Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), promised to recondition and smooth out my hair by giving it a Keratin boost (the primary protein in hair, skin and nails). It's not a straightening treatment but it does promise to improve the condition of my hair making it smoother and sleeker.
The process
The whole thing takes around two hours and involves a shampoo and a rough blow-dry followed by the keratin solution applied in small sections. The hair is blow-dried again and hair straighteners were used to smooth out any remaining kinks.
My verdict
I have thick, coarse and frizzy hair which is now smoother to touch and looks healthy, sleek and glossy. The natural wave of my hair frames my face better than before and the layers look much more flattering.
But…. it’s important to note that this is a hair-relaxing treatment and not a hair-straightening treatment. Although the kinks are less noticeable, my hair is still slightly frizzy around the hair line and there are still kinks underneath at the back.
Pros
- Excellent treatment to re-condition dry/damaged hair.
- Leaves hair shiny and glossy.
- Suitable for all hair types and conditions.
- Protect from every-day damage
- Treatment time is much more manageable (2hrs) in contrast to full-on straightening treatments which can take 5+ hours.
- Unlike chemical-based treatments, when the BKT is redone it is reapplied all over thus all your hair benefits from a recondition - from roots to tips!
Cons
- Expensive for what it is, but if you've got the cash and want to treat yourself, your hair will feel amazing.
- It's not permanent so, if you like the results, regular treatments will be required.
- It won't straighten hair, at best it will calm down and smooth out the outer layer.
The treatment is expected to last approximately 10-12 weeks, however as this is treatment isn't permanent, it's important to remember that the effects will lessen as you wash your hair.
Treatment price guide:
- For short fine hair - expect to pay in the region of £150
- For thick long hair - expect to pay in the region of £300
