As Most Haunted Series 9 is released on DVD this week, courtesy of Universal Pictures, Tiscali has caught up with Becky Walsh, a psychic and author of Haunted West End Theatres to talk about ghosts, sensing spirits as well as her most frightening encounter.

1) How do you know if you have a ghost in your house?You are likely to have cold spots in the house and hear odd sounds when there is no-one in the room. You'll also experience strange smells and a feeling of being watched.
2) What should you do if you have a ghost in your house?
A ghost is just a person without a body, so you can talk to them in much the same way as you can to a living person. Let it know you live here and ask it to leave if you need it to stop freaking you out, or you can have it live alongside you.
If you really want it to go, ask a medium to move it on.
Sometimes, the spirit of a person can be left on this earth bound plain. They do not change vibration therefore do not move on to the astral plain. They have missed the port hole opening which happens when you die. The port hole is the doorway to the spirit world.
Spirit release is like opening the port hole in their vibration. We, as mediums, use our physical vibration and blend it with the vibration of spirit. This means that because of the blending of the two worlds, spirit people can make the transformation with ease. The simplest way to do this is to call the appropriate people together at this and the other side of life, and then having the intention of the greater good, we ask our angels and guides to take this grounded spirit to a place that is best for them. Not everything belongs in the light.
3) Is there such a thing as a good or a bad spirit?
Yes, as there are good and bad people in the world.
4) Can you capture pictures of ghosts on camera or camcorder?
Orbs are thought to be the first stages of a spirit manifestation. Since the invention of night vision and digital cameras, such things as orbs have appeared on film. There is no scientific explanation for this yet there is no scientific evidence to say that these are spirits. It is said Orbs can easily be reflected light on dust particles or other natural anomalies. These phenomena cannot be explained. We have managed to capture several of these orbs in our investigations of theatres around the west end for the book 'haunted west end theatres'.
Spirit lights are when you may see a light on white or purple. These lights are very small and are gone in a flash. You can tell these lights are paranormal for a simple reason; with most light when you close your eyes after seeing it, you can still see an image of the lights on the back of your eye lids, with spirit lights you can't.
Stored energy As energy cannot be created or destroyed the trapped residual energy becomes stored like on a video tape. When the vibrational energy being replayed is light, people may see what they think is a ghost. When it is sound vibration, people may think they hear a ghost. Ghosts can be as simple as this - just a replay.
Grounded Ghosts
Sometimes the spirit can be grounded. This is usually caused when there has been a sudden death, where the spirit has not realised it has died and therefore not moved into the light or the spirit world. Sometimes the spirit refuses to move, especially if they feel they have been bad people on the earth plane and therefore, scared of judgement on the other side (a belief from religious teachings). This would not be the case, as in the spirit realm, the only judge is yourself. The difference is that you have clarity in the spirit world that you don't have here.
Visitation
When the spirit comes from the spirit world to visit friends and families or to spend time in a place they enjoyed during their lives on this earth. They may interact if needed with a medium to bring through messages for loved ones left behind.
Poltergeist
'Poltergeist' is the German for 'noisy ghost - often associated with hormonal teenagers. According to some experts, Poltergeists are created by the high emotions of people usually experiencing a traumatic time. Once the problems are sorted, the poltergeist disappears. This is because a ghost needs physical energy to do anything in this physical plain.
6) Does exorcism really work?
Exorcism also known as Spirit release really does work.
7) What gives some people the gift to contact spirits over others?
Every medium is a psychic, but not every psychic is a medium. A psychic is sensitive to energy. By having heightened sensitivity, they can pick up information from the energy around them.
We are all spirit beings, and after death, that spirit lives on after the physical body has gone. The spirit (our mind, will and emotions) is an energy force that maintains the individual's personality, beyond life. The best and simplest explanation is that the mind lives on.
Within our physical environment, the mind lives on a different plane. Everything around us, including ourselves, vibrates at a certain frequency. The spirit plane vibrates at a higher frequency, it's like sound and radio waves, just because we can't see them, it doesn't mean they don't exist. When we die and leave our bodies, we refine our physical vibration to the higher vibration of light, sometimes a spirit doesn't refine their vibration to the other plane and becomes trapped on our earthly plane. This normally leads to a haunting.
A medium has the ability to change their energy/vibration to be able to communicate with those who have crossed over to the other plane. Sometimes the signal is very clear and sometimes not, (similar to a bad mobile phone signal). It takes a spirit a great deal of effort to communicate with us, as they have to lower their vibration. We then raise our vibration to meet the spirit in the middle. Anyone can contact spirits with the right discipline. It's a case of sensitivity to vibration. People for years have tried many ways to contact the spirit world. Alexander Graham Bell was trying this when he came across the idea for a telephone!
8) Can anyone perform a séance?
Anyone can, but it's not advisable unless you have someone along who knows and understands what to do if it goes wrong. People can freak out!
9) What's your most frightening encounter?
When I moved to London I lived in a truly haunted flat. The ghost lady who lived in the house would use electricity to gain power. This is quite common with spirits. They are not of this vibration so they use the energy of the living, such as an energetic teenager, to be able to do anything and get themselves attention.
It was always electrical equipment that she would move across the room. When I first moved in I had a near death experience plugging in an angle pose lamp, whilst holding it. I had a DC shock and I couldn't let go, at one point I left my body and looked back at myself. If it wasn't for one of my flat mates unplugging me I doubt I would be here today. I don't put this down to the ghost.
It seems she was a Jewish German living there at the time of the war. She couldn't leave the flat, which is why she couldn't move on as a spirit. We spent a long time telling her the war was over However one day I decided that I would find a way for her to move on, so not knowing exactly what I was doing, I opened all the windows and doors, lit a bunch of incense and wafted the smoke around shouting for her to go into the light and for spirit to come and take her. The flat became full of sunlight and a breeze. The sun went behind a cloud and I knew she had gone.
10) Should you be afraid of ghosts?
No - the living are the problem. In my current home I have a lovely lady who stays in the house. She often asks me to buy fresh cut flowers as she likes the smell. I wouldn't mind, but she doesn't buy them!
My home is well protected. One day a builder was over to do work on the outside of the house. I had gone out to get some cash from bank for him. When I came back he was white as a sheet. I asked him what happened. He said he was coming in doors from outside and he heard footsteps running at him across the floor and a bang on the table in front of him. When I asked him why he was coming into the house, he couldn't answer quickly enough. I think he was coming in to have a look around, which my spirit protection would not allow. Living with ghosts and spirits can be a wonderful thing!
