Question

I have always seemed to have more of a 'tubule' mass in my left testicle than in my right.

During the past few months I have noticed that the pubic hair around my testicles has started to become extremely brittle, wispy/thin and grey.

Now there seems to be very little hair there at all – I am 23 and am not suffering hair loss elsewhere.

Today I experienced some very slight discomfort in the left testicle and have noticed that the mass of vessels is getting quite large.

Answer

It's time to go and get a professional to examine you.

The most likely diagnoses are varicocele or a spermatocoele – which is similar – the first is like a varicose vein supplying the testicle and the second is a kind of cyst in the spermatic storage area.

Both are benign but both can affect fertility and both can cause discomfort. The hair loss on the surface doesn't add up for me – I think it may just be coincidental. The hair coverage on the scrotum is not uniform.

Yours sincerely

Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
