Broken frenulum

Can I extend my foreskin?

I'm circumcised – can my foreskin be restored?

I've got phimosis but am scared of circumcision

Question

Just before sex the piece of skin connecting my foreskin to my penis broke, which caused pain and heavy bleeding.

What does this mean and how will it affect me? Does this need reconnecting?

Answer

You have my heartfelt sympathy.

In summary, your problems have occurred following trauma to the foreskin. This can sometimes, although not always, be related to having a rather short join between the area just in front of the head or glans of the penis and the foreskin.

This part of the anatomy is called the frenulum, which you would appear to have broken, leading to the pain and bleeding.

It is quite possible that the problem will right itself over two weeks or so; although sometimes during the healing process, scarring may occur, leading to a shorter frenulum than before and recurrent problems.

This would quite likely be an indication for adult circumcision and I would advise that you go to see your doctor and obtain his opinion following an examination.

If circumcision proves to be necessary, then it is very likely to improve matters for you and your partner!

Yours sincerely

Dr John Pillinger, GP
