Question
I have just had the results back from a hormonal blood check that suggest that I have a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome.
I realise what this condition is (cysts on the ovaries) and I know the symptoms, because I have been gaining weight and also getting hairy.
Does this mean that my chance of pregnancy is now greatly reduced?
Answer
It is likely that your fertility will be reduced by this problem and, in fact, http://www.verity-pcos.org.uk is an excellent and concise resource of information about this condition.
You might also want to read http://www.rcog.org.uk/guidelines/management.html, which is a bit technical but lays out exactly what the best practice is in the UK for management of this problem. This is on the site of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is by far and away the most authoritative resource on management of the syndrome.
Yours sincerely
Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
