Why is the neck of my womb swollen?

Question
The skin around my clitoris and pubic hair is extremely itchy. I have had thrush before but this seems different - it isn't in or around my vagina, but more towards the front.

There doesn't appear to be anything to see (ie lice), just irritated red skin. I have tried using Canesten, but it stings the irritated area. I have one sexual partner, my husband, who hasn't complained of anything.

Although I wash regularly and have been bathing the area with cold water, wearing cotton underwear etc, it just seems to be getting worse. What could this be and how do I get rid of it?

Answer
There could be a number of causes for this, but none of them are serious.

Irritation in this area is a real nuisance, not to say an embarrassment. You are right, it doesn't sound like thrush, because:

  • it is confined to the areas you mention
  • you haven't said anything about a discharge
  • you have tried an appropriate treatment.
  • It is most likely to be some form of dermatitis, and its most common cause in this area is a reaction to something you are coming into contact with.

This could be to do with clothing - say the material of your underwear or jeans, or a dye used to colour your underwear if they are not white.

Panty liners or cleansing tissues could be a factor; it could be a vaginal deodorant or spray if you use one, or even a bath additive of some sort. I have even known biological washing powders to cause this problem.

Your pubic area is very sensitive, so these products may not cause problems elsewhere. Have a think about what things might be causing the itching and take some steps to change them.

As far as getting some relief from the itching, try getting some 1 per cent hydrocortisone cream. This is mild, but very good for relieving itching and inflammation, and you can buy it over the counter quite cheaply.

If it doesn't settle down or you get other symptoms as well, it would be best to check with your GP.

    Yours sincerely
