How long can chlamydia be present?

I have just been diagnosed with chlamydia and have made an appointment with my doctor to get antibiotics.

I would like to know how long chlamydia can be in the body before symptoms occur. I have been with my boyfriend for about 15 years. I have never had any other partner.

Could it be that he was unfaithful? He has shown the signs of having it for some time (painful testes). Or could he have caught it before we got together and it has just become apparent now?

Answer

Chlamydia can be present for years and years - there is no way of knowing. It is typical of it to not reveal itself for a long time.

You aren't going to be able to work out whether he has been unfaithful to you in the last 15 years on the basis of this infection.

However, it is important that he is treated too, it will just go back and forward between you otherwise.
