Mouth ulcers in a young boy
Other Qs & As
My son is nine years old and suffers from mouth ulcers frequently.
What advice can you give me about treating them?
Answer
There are many different causes of mouth ulcers. The most common culprits are aphthous ulcers, which tend to be painful ulcers in small numbers and seem to occur at times of stress. The cause is unknown.
Other rarer causes of ulcers are viruses. Some examples are the Coxsackie virus which causes hand, foot and mouth disease and also produces multiple ulcers in the mouth. These ulcers would not tend to recur.
Herpes simplex virus can produce dramatic painful mouth ulceration, with fever and swollen lymph glands, but with this infection too, recurrence of mouth ulceration is rare (most recurrences tend to consist of cold sores).
