Our daughter has labyrinthitis

Other Qs & As

My daughter has glue ear - how can I help?

Tonsil growths – what can I do?

Question

My daughter has recently been diagnosed as having labyrinthitis, and it was described as a form of vertigo but as she is so young I wondered what her future diagnosis would be?

And if she gets another attack what is the best thing to do?

Answer

Labyrinthitis is a condition in which the labyrinth (part of the inner ear) becomes inflamed, causing vertigo, balance disturbance and/or hearing loss.

Labyrinthitis often occurs as part of a viral or bacterial infection, for example, with acommon cold, influenza or even measles.

Usually the symptoms caused by labyrinthitis settle without any treatment over a few days, or at the most, weeks. If necessary, medication can be given to reduce vertigo and balance problems.

More rarely, if there is evidence to suggest that pus has developed in the inner ear, surgery may be necessary to prevent permanent damage to hearing and balance.

If your daughter has recovered from her bout of labyrinthitis and her balance and hearing are now fine I wouldn't expect her to have any longlasting effects from this episode. If she ever got it again it may simply be a matter of bad luck but it would be advisable to see your GP anyway.

Yours sincerely
