How do I know if my son is colour blind?

I am concerned that the child is unable to distinguish between red and green.

He often mixes these up but has no difficulties with other colours.

Is this an early sign of colour blindness?

Answer

Your son might well be red/green colour blind (about 8 per cent of boys are) but the charts that GPs usually use to check for colour blindness may be too difficult for a three year old, so testing at this age may produce unreliable results.

Your son should be invited to a general developmental check when he is about four, so this would be an ideal time for him to have a check for colour blindness.

If he does prove to be red/green colour blind it will probably have very little impact on his life but it would be useful for his teachers at school to be aware of the fact.
