Protein found in my urine
Other Qs & As
Afraid of the smear test
I have just got a report back from my doctor's office saying I have protein in my urinalysis.
What does that mean?
Answer
The most common cause of this is an infection in the urine â cystitis. The protein is caused by bacteria.
It is likely that your doctor will want to send a sample of your urine to the bacteriology lab to exclude this.
The only other likely case is an inflammation of the kidney â this is called 'nephritis' or 'glomerulonephritis'.
In most cases this is a mild, self-limiting problem which will resolve itself. However, it needs to be watched carefully by monitoring blood and urine tests.
Yours sincerely
