My 38-year-old brother has noticed over the past two months that there is blood in his sperm.
There are no 'testicular lumps and bumps' and no lesions of note on his penis.
Last sexual intercourse was a while ago. What are the implications of this? Am I over-reacting?
Answer
You are right to be concerned because it is never normal to have blood in the semen. However, you needn't be too concerned because it is usually a simple infection which can be easily treated.
The commonest causes are infections in the epididymus (epididymitis), but sometimes it can happen because of a swollen or inflamed vein in that area â it's called a 'varicocele'. This is just like a varicose vein except it is next to the testes instead of in the leg!
If necessary it can be treated but this would need a small operation. The bottom line is that he should see his GP for an examination and for a urine sample and/or semen sample to be analysed by the lab.
Yours sincerely
Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
