Operation to remove fibroids

Other Qs & As

Can I expect discomfort from a hysteroscopy?

Is there an alternative to a hysterectomy to treat fibroids?

Surgery for prolapse

Question

I have large fibroids. I have been told I need to have them removed and I am waiting for entry to hospital for a hysterectomy.

I decided to try homeopathy in the meantime. What is your view on this and what should I do if the operation appointment suddenly comes through?

Answer

The only reason to have a hysterectomy for fibroids is to remove the symptoms they are causing. These symptoms tend to be of only two kinds: heavy menstrual bleeding and pain.

If the homeopathic treatment effectively reduces these symptoms to the level where you are content to carry on, then there is no need for the hysterectomy.

You can simply say you don't want the operation at this time, but would like to reconsider it if the symptoms should get worse again.

You are only 46, so you might have around 10 more years of periods. A lot can change in 10 years.

Yours sincerely

Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
