Is a hysteroscopy as an outpatient a painless and safe procedure?
Answer
A hysteroscopy is a procedure where the doctor can directly examine the inside of your uterus with a viewing instrument.
The narrow viewing tube is introduced into the cavity of the uterus through the cervix, which is gently dilated at first and is safe and useful.
Only mild discomfort is ever experienced, so it is an ideal procedure to be done in an outpatient setting. However it is often done in conjunction with a laparoscopy, which introduces a fine viewing tube just under the belly button to look inside the abdomen at the opening into the inner end of the fallopian tubes and the ovaries themselves. This would not however be possible as an outpatient.
The hysteroscopy enables the surgeon to look for any adhesions in the cavity of the womb (where opposite walls may be sticking together or for any polyps or benign growths. I hope all goes well for you.
Yours sincerely
