Do I have a prostate infection?
My father has had removal of the postate and a hernia
My prostate operation hasn't worked
What are the symptoms of prostate trouble?
Worried about prostate problems
Question
I have been diagnosed with prostatitis and have been taking antibiotics for four weeks.
The symptoms are still present, so I presume it is possible that this is a chronic (non-bacterial) condition, which will not improve.
Before abandoning hope of being cured by antibiotics, can further tests be done to confirm that there is no infection?
Should I expect my GP to offer any tests or would I need to push for them to be done?
Answer
I find your question quite puzzling, because personally I wouldn't regard a GP as a suitable person to treat prostatitis.
This is a specialist business, and I wouldn't attempt to treat it myself. I feel that everyone who has prostatitis should go to a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic, where they have top facilities for this sort of thing.
You don't say how you got the prostatitis. But you may need to modify your sex life to prevent it from flaring up again.
Finally, you're taking a rather despondent view of all this! With adequate investigation and treatment from a GUM Clinic, there's a good chance that you can soon be cured.
Yours sincerely
Dr David Delvin, GP
