Will a vasectomy make me impotent?

Question

I recently had avasectomy and am still sore on one side.

I can feel swelling in the vas that was snipped; one side is a bit sore and quite hard (swollen) to the touch. The other is not a problem. Is this normal?

I have not been told much about recovery.

Answer

The symptoms you describe are not unusual and likely to be related to soft tissue swelling and/or minor bleeding into the area concerned. This usually subsides gradually, resolving completely.

On the subject of lumps in the scrotum following vasectomy, very rarely, benign lumps in the surgical areas on either side of the scrotum (sperm granuloma) occur around a month later and can be removed if necessary.

If your symptoms fail to settle down, you should of course ask your doctor to review the situation.

Yours sincerely

Dr John Pillinger, GP
