Will a vasectomy make me impotent?
Question
Since having a vasectomy, the volume of semen produced is very reduced. Can anything be done about this?
Answer
Actually, having a vasectomy doesn't reduce the volume of semen produced at ejaculation because there is no logical reason why it should.
The fluid produced consists mainly of secretions from the seminal vesicles, some from the prostate gland and a small amount from the Cowper's glands further along the system of tubes.
Before the vasectomy, only sperm is produced by the testicles and transported along the vas deferens tubes to be mixed with the fluid in the seminal vesicles.
After vasectomy all the fluids are still produced in the normal way it is just that they are devoid of sperm.
The cause of your diminishing semen volume therefore has a different explanation.
Dehydration, the side-effects of any medication, and simply getting older are common causes whilst of course at 55, the strength of the muscular contractions which lead to the semen being forcibly ejaculated from the penis in spurts tends to diminish so expelling less fluid anyway.
Yours sincerely
