My life is being ruined by my large breasts...

Other Qs & As

I have gynaecomastia

I'm male and have swollen, puffy nipples

My son and I have strangely shaped nipples

My son appears to be developing breasts?

Question

My life is being ruined by my large breasts. Why are they a problem, I hear you asking. Well, they wouldn¹t be except for the fact that I'm actually a boy.

My confidence is very low and I can't wear most types of clothing because they show my breasts. They are really affecting my life and preventing me from going out and having relationships.

My GP told me that I would grow out of it, but I'm 18 now and there has been no change for a while. There¹s no obvious cause for them as I¹m not overweight. Should I have surgery or should I get a specialist opinion?

Or is there medication I can take?

Answer

This is a really common problem in men of your age group and its has a lot to do with the recent changes that your hormones have recently been going through.

You don't complete puberty until your early twenties (when your hip bones finally stop growing ) so it may be a little time yet before everything settles down.

Your GP was right, you will 'grow out of it', but nobody can be actually sure exactly when that moment will be. You just need to hang on in there.

The one thing that I am sure about is that you will be much more aware of the problem than any of the women you meet, I promise.

Thinking back to when I was 18 (and I can still remember that far back), I can only recall that all the blokes I knew were really tall compared to me, which I liked, and certainly nothing about their chest size.

As you say, you are not overweight and I would therefore have every expectation that your breasts will gradually become a size which is proportionate to your chest.

By all means, do go and see your GP for further advice as I think the extra reassurance would help you.

I hope this helps you to feel happier about yourself.

Yours sincerely
