Why does my son become unconscious when he cries?

Other Qs & As

How can I tell if my daughter's taking drugs?

Is croup contagious?

What determines a child's blood group?

Question

My three-year-old son cries but does not make any sound.

He then does not breathe, goes blue and becomes unconscious. He falls to the floor with his arms bent up rigid and his head goes to the left and his mouth goes into a wide grin.

It often takes a while to get him to come round by blowing into his face. I would like to know what it is, how to prevent it and what to do when it happens again.

This is the third time it has happened. On the previous two occasions he hit his head and then started crying before becoming unconscious.

Answer

This could be '' which occur when a child is upset. These are actually harmless and the child will recover each time by himself.

Or this could be another problem – too many possibilities to discuss here – all of which require their own particular treatment.

The important thing here is to get a proper diagnosis. You need to consult your GP and get the specialist opinion of a paediatrician.

Yours sincerely

Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
