My baby's belly button keeps weeping a foul-smelling fluid

Other Qs & As

At what age do babies start teething?

Does a general anaesthetic affect breast milk?

Does cradle cap smell?

How often will my baby see the health visitor?

My baby doesn't respond to sound

Our baby daughter is so demanding

Should my 18-month-old son be able to walk?

Question

My daughter is 17 weeks old and her belly button keeps opening and weeping a clear foul-smelling fluid.

Her appetite is the same and she is her normal self, it is just a bit tender.

How do I prevent it happening again?

She is bathed every day and we have always been careful washing her.

Answer

This is an infection and it might be caused by either bacteria or a yeast.

The best way to clear it up is to see the doctor and get a little swab taken so that the lab can find out what is causing the problem.

Then either the best cream or best tablets can be prescribed.

Yours sincerely

Dr Bob Leckridge, GP
