Not sure about son's ADHD

Other Q&As

Asperger's syndrome

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Should I be worried about son's bad behaviour?

Question

My son has been diagnosed with ADHD, but I am sure this is not the problem.

He suffers from mood swings for no apparent reason. He has the attitude of a teenager. He wets himself when he's asleep and has just developed a lazy eye.

Have you any idea? I am getting desperate, because they want to put him back on Dexedrine, which really does not help.

Answer

I am sorry to hear of your son's problems.

This really does sound like a complicated diagnosis, and possibilities include diabetes, chronic kidney infections and ADHD.

To try and sort out exactly what is happening here, I think your son needs at the very least to have some simple blood tests to check the state of his kidneys, liver and general blood.

He also probably requires formal assessment by a general physician/paediatrician if he has not already been checked. I realise that the difficult part may be in getting him to co-operate.

I also wonder if the drug Ritalin has been suggested, because this may be extremely effective in certain ADHD sufferers.

Do see his GP with him, and ask for a further opinion if you are now worried.

Yours sincerely

Dr Roger Henderson, GP
