Could you recommend a book to help saving a relationship?

Question

I was searching for help to save a failing relationship with my wife when I found your web site. I went to the section titled 'How to improve your relationship'. The article asked a series of questions and then said to contact a therapist. This is still a very private matter and, as I read the article further, a lot of the suggestions seem to address the problem I feel is at the heart of my marital problem.

Not lack of sex, although it is almost non-existent in the current state of my marriage, but rather, the lack of intimacy in my marriage.

Rather than seek a therapist, is there a book you would recommend that would help my wife and I get our relationship back on track?

Answer

David writes:

Well, I think that you're being a mite optimistic in suggesting that your 'failing relationship' could be put right by a book. I see from your details that you live in the north of Scotland, so I personally feel it would be much better if you availed yourselves of the excellent help provided by Couples Counselling Scotland. However, let's see what Christine says.

Christine adds:

I do agree that face-to-face counselling would probably be more help than any book. However, as you say you're not quite ready for that yet, I can recommend two books that should get you both thinking and - hopefully - talking together.

  • 'Better relationships' by Sarah Litvinoff, published by Vermilion.
  • 'Staying together' by Susan Quilliam, published by Vermilion.
  • I do hope they will give you some ideas that will really help you.

    Best of luck.

    Yours sincerely,

Dr David Delvin, GP and Christine Webber, Sex and Relationships Expert
