Making oral sex safe

Other Qs & As

How can I say that I don't like oral sex?

I can't make my lover come through oral sex

My girlfriend dislikes oral sex

My long-term boyfriend rarely goes down on me

Question

My friends have told me that when a man gives a girl oral sex she should wear some sort of protection.

Is this true and what is it?

Answer

David writes:

Well, there is a bit of a risk of passing on sex infections (particularly herpes) through oral sex. Gonorrhoea can also be passed on in this way – and possibly also chlamydia.

So, some prudently-minded women do use something called a 'dental dam' when they're letting a man 'go down' on them.

A dental dam is a rectangle of soft material, which you place over your pubes. Traditionally, these dams have been made of latex. For people who are allergic to latex, there are now non-latex types available. The guy then has to lick or kiss your clitoris through the dental dam.

Yes, this can be done! Not terribly romantic – but certainly a safer option.

Christine adds:

The easiest place to get hold of dental dams is through a wonderful sex shop/mail order business run by women, for women. It's called Sh! You can ring them on: 0207- 613 5458 – but it's easier to visit their website, which is: sh-womenstore.com.uk.

Prices of dams have gone up a little in recent years, but you can usually buy a latex one (flavoured, if you wish) for about £1.20. Non-latex ones cost around £2.20.

Yours sincerely
