Emtriva (emtricitabine) (Contd)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

You should tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are using, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Likewise, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medicines while you are taking this one, so that they can check that the combination is safe.

The manufacturer of this medicine does not yet have experience of using emtricitabine in combination with either lamivudine or zalcitabine for treating HIV infection and doesn't recommend these combinations at present.

Emtricitabine is removed from the body by the kidneys. The manufacturer of this medicine states that it should be used with caution in combination with medicines that are known to affect kidney function, or that are also eliminated from the body by the kidneys, because the safety of such combinations have not yet been evaluated. Your doctor or pharmacist will check the combination of medicines you are taking and perform extra monitoring if considered necessary.

Other medicines containing the same active ingredient

There are no other medicines available in the UK that contain emtricitabine as the sole active ingredient.

Truvada contains emtricitabine in combination with another anti-HIV medicine called tenofovir.
