Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Visual disturbances
  • Awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Dizziness
  • Sensation of ringing, or other noise in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Flushing
  • Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling (oedema)
  • Sleepiness (somnolence)
  • Weakness or loss of strength (asthenia)
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing or difficulty in breathing
  • Pain in the muscles and joints
  • Feeling of tightness in the throat
  • Rash or itching
  • The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer. For more information about any other possible risks associated with this medicine, please read the information provided with the medicine or consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    How can this medicine affect other medicines?

    Since this is a new medicine all its potential interactions may not yet be established. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and those bought over the counter, before you start treatment with this medicine. The following medicines must not be taken at the same time as eletriptan: - ergotamine or derivatives of ergotamine, eg dihydroergotamine, methysergide (not to be taken within 24 hours before or after taking eletriptan). - other 5HT agonists, eg sumatriptan, zolmitriptan - the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole - the antibiotics erythromycin and clarithromycin - HIV protease inhibitors, eg ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir. There may be an increased risk of side effects if this medicine is taken during treatment with the herbal remedy St John's wort.
