Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Pain in the stomach and abdominal area
  • Excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence)
  • Nausea
  • Skin rashes
  • High blood calcium level (hypercalcaemia)
  • High calcium levels in the urine

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Calcium salts may reduce the absorption from the gut of the following medicines: - tetracycline-type antibiotics, eg tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline - some quinolone-type antibiotics, eg ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin - iron preparations - bisphosphonates, eg etidronate - thyroxine - sodium fluoride. To avoid the calcium stopping these medicines from being adequately absorbed, the calcium dose should be separated from these medicines by at least four hours. If the amount of calcium in the blood becomes too high, it may enhance the effect on the heart of digoxin or other cardiac glycosides. Thiazide diuretics, eg bendrofluazide, can increase the amount of calcium in the body. If they are taken with calcium supplements this may therefore cause the calcium levels to rise too high. The following medicines may reduce the effect of vitamin D: - antiepileptic medicines, eg phenytoin - barbiturates - corticosteroids, eg hydrocortisone.
