Calcium carbonate supplements (Contd)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Calcium salts may reduce the absorption from the gut of the following medicines: - tetracycline-type antibiotics, eg tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline - some quinolone-type antibiotics, eg ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin - iron preparations - bisphosphonates, eg etidronate - thyroxine - sodium fluoride. To avoid the calcium stopping these medicines from being adequately absorbed, the calcium dose should be separated from these medicines by at least four hours. Vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium. Do not take vitamin D supplements without consulting your doctor first. If the amount of calcium in the blood becomes too high, it may enhance the effect on the heart of digoxin or other cardiac glycosides. Thiazide diuretics, eg bendrofluazide, can increase the amount of calcium in the body. If they are taken with calcium supplements this may therefore cause the calcium levels to rise too high.
