How can this medicine affect other medicines?
This medicine should not be taken at the same time as or within 2 weeks of stopping a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant, eg phenelzine, isocarboxacid, selegiline or moclobemide.
Linezolid should not be taken with the following medicines unless the individual is under close medical observation and their blood pressure is monitored:-
- SSRI antidepressants, eg fluoxetine
- tricyclic antidepressants, eg amitriptyline
- serotonin agonists (triptans), eg sumatriptan, almotriptan
- decongestants, eg pseudoephedrine, phenylpropanolamine, ephedrine, phenylephrine (these are often found in cold and flu remedies)
- medicines that open the airways, eg salbutamol, salmeterol, terbutaline
- adrenaline or noradrenaline
- amphetamine
- methylphenidate
- pethidine
- buspirone
- dopamine or dobutamine
- vasopressin
There may be a large increase in blood pressure when linezolid is taken with large amounts of tyramine rich foods. Examples of foods to avoid in excess are:-
- Matured cheeses
- Yeast extracts eg. Oxo, Bovril, Marmite
- Fermented soya bean products such as soy sauce
- Undistilled alcoholic drinks.
