How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Galantamine has the potential to slow down the heart rate. If it is taken with other medicines that have this effect, such as digoxin and beta blockers, this effect may be enhanced. Galantamine will antagonise the effects of medicines which act by blocking or decreasing the actions of acetylcholine (anticholinergic medicines), and so should not be taken with them. These medicines include hyoscine, atropine, benzhexol, procyclidine, ipratropium, oxitropium and oxybutinin. Galantamine should not be taken with other medicines which increase the activity of acetylcholine, such as donepezil, rivastigmine, neostigmine, distigmine and pyridostigmine. The blood levels of galantamine may be increased when taken with the following medicines:- - the SSRI antidepressants paroxetine, fluoxetine and fluvoxamine - erythromycin - quinidine - ketoconazole - ritonavir. This may increase side effects such as nausea and vomiting and your doctor may therefore consider reducing the dose of galantamine.
