How does it work?

Probenecid works on the kidneys to increase the rate at which uric acid is excreted. In gout, cystals of uric acid form in the joints and cause the characteristic pain and inflammation. By lowering the levels of uric acid, gout can be prevented. Although probenecid increases the rate of removal of uric acid in the urine, it actually decreases the rate of removal of certain other medicines e.g. some antibiotics. This effect has been used to increase the levels of some antibiotics in the body

What is it used for?

Long-term prevention of gout

Used with antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins increase their effectiveness

Warning!

This medicine may cause dizziness. Avoid driving and operating machinery if affected.

It is important to drink plenty of fluids whilst being treated with this medicine.

Use with caution in

Decreased kidney function

Lack of the chemical G6PD in the blood (G6PD deficiency)

Peptic ulcer

Not to be used in

Acute gout

Blood disorders

Children under 2 years of age

Kidney stones

Known sensitivity or allergy to any ingredient

Life long inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias)

Severe kidney disease

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than the possible risk to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

Label warnings

Do not take anything containing aspirin whilst taking this medication.

Take this medication with or after food.

This medication is to be taken with plenty of water.
