How does it work?

Chlortetracycline belongs to a group of antibiotics called tetracyclines. Tetracyclines inhibit the growth of a wide variety of bacteria. Chlortetracycline interferes with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply. This inhibits the ability of the bacteria to grow (i.e. it has a bacteriostatic action) and therefore stops the spread of the infection. By controlling bacterial numbers, inflammation can be reduced and skin infections healed. Chlortetracycline can be used as an eye ointment to treat infections of the eye, including chlamydia. It is also used as a topical ointment to treat bacterial skin infections.
