Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Dry mouth
Swelling of the legs and ankles due to excess fluid retention (peripheral oedema)
Depression
Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)
Balance problems involving the inner ear (vertigo)
Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
Dizziness
Itching (pruritis)
Sleepiness (somnolence)
Inflammation of the skin (dermatitis)
Itchy rash (urticaria)
A general feeling of being unwell (malaise)
Pain in the muscles and joints
Headache
Excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence)
Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
Esomeprazole may increase the blood level of the following medicines:-
- citalopram
- clomipramine
- imipramine
- diazepam
- barbiturates
- propranolol
- proguanil
- phenytoin (the manufacturer recommends that people taking phenytoin should have their phenytoin blood levels monitored when starting or stopping esomerazole).
Esomeprazole may increase the anti-blood-clotting effect of the anticoagulant medicine warfarin. If you are taking warfarin you should have your blood clotting time monitored when starting and stopping this medicine.
Esomeprazole may decrease the absorption of the following medicines from the gut:-
- ketoconazole
- itraconazole.
