How can this medicine affect other medicines?

It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Likewise, always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medicines during treatment with this one so that they can ensure that the combination is safe.

The blood pressure lowering effect of this medicine may be increased if it is taken with alcohol or any of the following medicines, which can also reduce blood pressure:

other medicines for high blood pressure

narcotics

barbiturates

antidepressants

baclofen.

If your blood pressure falls too low due to the combination of medicines it might make you feel dizzy, particularly when moving from sitting or lying to a standing position. If this is the case let your doctor know.

Telmisartan may increase blood potassium levels. The amount of potassium in your blood should be monitored if you are taking this medicine with any of the following, which can also increase blood potassium:

potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone

potassium supplements

potassium-containing salt substitutes

heparin

ciclosporin.

Telmisartan may increase the blood levels of the following medicines:

digoxin

lithium.

If it is necessary for you to take either of these medicines in combination with telmisartan your doctor may need to monitor their blood levels to make sure they do not rise too high.

Other medicines containing the same active ingredient

There are no other medicines available in the UK that contain telmisartan as the sole active ingredient.

MicardisPlus contains telmisartan in combination with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.
